  A lot is going on!

13-02-2010 by Sph!nx

First I'd like to introduce our newest team member, smd_3d. He is a talented coder and musician. You can expect some great things coming from him!

One of these things is QMIDI 3, a powerful midi music composer and in the next few days more info will be presented. Soon we will have public beta tests!

Origin, our game engine is still in development but is making great progress and the core of the engine is now completely done. The focus now lays on creating all the game entities and even physics have been tested. We are not sure how far the physics system will be implemented but things are looking promising.

X Viewer is an application mostly designed as a support for content development for Origin. It's a content viewer to view maps and models without the need to implement them in the engine. It is designed for our own team but it will be released publicly so other can benefit from it too. More info on that soon!

Cheers!

  Land of Legends released!

21-12-2009 by Hezus

After we've announced Land of Legends a year ago a lot of work has been done, a lot of problems were solved and issues tackled and I'm proud to announce that Land of Legends - Heroes of Loria has been released!

For the sake of nogstalgia, I'd like to give you a quick tour through the history of the MOD. It was Sph!nx and I, back in 2005, who started off with "Chubbyland", a map for Sven Co-op. We created a lot of custom content of which only a few fragments remain in Land of Legends today, because we then took a step further to a larger concept of a map series.

This is where Goanna joined us and from 2007 and on the project started to see some serious development. Scotsman joined us as our "sounds dude" and helped testing our maps. In November 2008 the MOD went public and January 2009 it hit ModDB. 2009 was a very engaging year, since Goanna left and Katana joined us and we also took a 2 month break from development, making all the difference. I'd like to thank all people who've helped making Land of Legends what it is today.

Even though the Half-Life community isn't as big as it used to be, many people stuck with us during the development and I would also like to thank those people as well!

The result of years of work lays before you now and I hope you're enjoying it as much as we do! So head over to our downloads page and grab your copy! While downloading, why not take a look at our manual to find out about the things that make Legends special!

If you like our project, please vote for us in the MODDB Mod of the Year award! Thanks!

Welcome back to the Land of Legends update of December!

As the title says, Land of Legends is close to release! We're currently running the last mile of our development cycle and in this month's update, I would like to show you some screenshots of the last two maps. Enjoy these brand new screenshots!

As a little extra, I've created a bonus map for some extra fun while playing Land of Legends. In this arena, you'll face all monsters from the lands of Loria in 15 thrilling waves. That magic staff will surely come in handy!

Because December traditionally is a really busy month, I wouldn't dare to give you an official release date, but to our faithful watchers: Make sure you check this page regulary ;). In case anyone is hungry for more new Legends material, then please check out our restyled website!

Thanks for reading!

  Land of Legends Enhancements

Welcome back to another update of Land of Legends!

In this month's update I would like to show our fans a few ways how we have been improving Land of Legends. I've taken a look at our Media page and realised how terribly outdated our screenshots are. While I would just love to throw them all out and start with a fresh batch of new screenshots, they also show pretty well how the mod has flourished over the past years.

First off, creating custom content has always been the goal of this mod since it started. We wanted to make something unique, something the regular Half-Life content couldn't offer. We started with the most important content, which are models and textures. More and more we've discovered how much content could be changed, like skies, HUD, sounds and gameplay. This first screenshot shows the improvements we've made to the environment and the overall experience of the surroundings. More NPCs, more interactive elements and a richer world will contribute to a better gaming experience.

Secondly, there have been a lot of visual adjustments. As you can see from the screenshot below, we've used better lighting techniques to bring our world to life. Half-Life's Goldsource engine is old and all effects are static, which means there is a limit to how well maps can look. By using visual tricks and clever use of the engine resources, we're boosting the maps to a new level. We are aware that its also possible to fake bump mapping effects and use detail textures, which will make the maps look even nicer, but most of our maps are on the brink of hitting the engine limits as they are, so sadly enough, that will not be an option for us.

Lastly, we've added a lot of environment sounds and dynamic elements that you can't see from screenshots, but those also contribute to the overall experience, making Land of Legends the colourful world we wanted it to be.

As you can see I've taken some time to update our ModDB page. I hope you all like it! Thanks for reading!

  Land of Legends is back

Welcome back to the Land of Legends news update!

In July we've announced a development break for the Land of Legends mod. We've pretty much enjoyed our time in the sun this summer and in September we got the team back together to discuss the course of the mod.

Even though the break gave us some creative impulses, the Half-Life (Gold-Source) engine is too limited to reach what we want to create; a big world with a lot of options. That's why we are currently experimenting with our own engine! We are still very much interested in making Legends, so the decision has been made to make a cut in the Half-Life version and continue the story in our own engine. This is a classis win-win situation, because in the new engine we get to create what we want and by making the cut we'll boost the development status up to 90%, which gives you the chance to play this sooner. All content made for maps which are going to be cut, will be integrated in the existing maps so they will also be richer and have more variation. After the cut Land of Legends will still have a decent size of 11 maps, so that's not all that bad.

We don't have that much new stuff to show, since the last maps are still in pretty early stages, but here are some shots, that will hint which direction the last map will have ;)

Thanks for tuning in with us and we'll try to update on a monthly basis again from now on!

End of summer break... A lot is going on!

We hope everybody had a nice summer and is now well rested to return to 'normal' duties again! :P We here at DevEd are, and so the Legends crew is back at work on new maps and content! There isn't much I can say about it yet, so stay tuned!

As you can see, We've got us a new site and forum! You can't see the boards initialy, you have to register yourself an account, but we welcome you to do so!

More progress has been made on the DevEd 3D engine! It has been renamed to 'Origin' and is recoded, again, with an improved map- and entities loading code. The first internal alpha has been released!

  Land of Legends Development Pause

08-07-2009 by Hezus

Welcome to another update of Land of Legends.

As some of you might have noticed, we missed the monthly update in June. While we used to update on a regular basis, the development has been slow lately. This has various reasons and I strongly believe our (faithful) Watchers should know what's currently going on within the team.

We've decided to pause the development of Land of Legends for the summer months of July and August. Most of the development has been done by me and Katana and we both had the feeling, that we've hit a rather annoying developers-block. The ideas and inspiration isn't exactly flowing and the areas we designed were starting to look bland. For the sake of the quality of the mod we've decided to take a break and start working on other projects for a while to get our inspiration for Legends back.

Next to that, I have a very busy schedule this summer with lots of trips and traveling planned, which doesn't really leave any room for development. Besides, summer is meant to be spend outside in the sun ;)

Don't worry, the mod is not death and will surely continue it's development in September, when the amount of free time has increased, the weather is rainy and the money has ran out to spend on travelling :)

Have a good summer and I'm hoping to see you all back here in 2 months!

  DevEd 3D Update

30-06-2009 by Sph!nx

We've overcome a major obstacle with our game engine, DevEd 3D! We've had some problems giving the individual entities their own actions. With the help of some good people we managed to get it working!

The entity is presented as a gem, that the player ball can pickup and adds points to the score. This is just a simple setup for the base engine.

We've now reached a point where we can really start to work on a real game. The team has started creating a concept but I can't say much about that because everything is still open to change.

Engine development will from now on be in theme of the next game project and the base engine, DevEd 3D, will be developed further side by side, with simple template, or placeholder, entities for future projects.

Thanks and keep an eye on this site for more news!

  Development Centre Launched!

29-05-2009 by Sph!nx

The Development Centre has launched! It's a WIKI like database site that will be a growing guide into the world of game modding and (independent) game design.

It is still a bit empty but that will change. Our team will gradually add tutorials and other resources and everybody is free to register and contribute to the Development Centre as well!

  Land of Legends Media Update

18-05-2009 by Hezus

Welcome to the monthly update of Land of Legends! In last months update I asked for a mapper to help me fill the gap, which was left after Goanna quit the development of the mod. My call was answered and I received some promising applications from which I picked two people for the job: Butt_Kicker and Katana (both from Lithuania) joined the team and are now working on new maps for Legends. Here are some screenshots Katana sent me earlier:

In addition to that, I’ve put together a video of the cinematic intro sequence you’ll see once you start playing Land of Legends, explaining some of the background storyline. For more information and captions (in case you have trouble reading them from the small screen) please check the video’s description.

In other news, Sven Co-op released 2 hotfixes to fix several bugs from 4.0B. This is interesting for us, since Land of Legends uses Sven Co-op's code as a base. Once all bugs have been fixed, we’ll switch over to 4.0, so we can use features like reviving and fog, making Land of Legends even more enjoyable!

Thanks for all support so far and ‘till next months update!
